The Big Island of Hawaii

I was really looking forward to this island and hoping we would get some good volcano and/or lava shots. Unfortunately, the entire area where the lava was flowing was off limits to everybody...researchers and locals, so we didn't have a chance to get anywhere near. From the Hawaii Volcano Observatory we were able to see a crater and one section of it was glowing red. We photographed the crater for the evening. The best part about this island was the NeNe geese. Jack had been wanting to see NeNe. We drove back through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and were almost to the end of the road (lava had covered the road some time before) when I spotted some Nene. We finally found a group of them out on the lava. I let Jack and Marti out of the car to photograph while I went up and found a parking spot, then joined the group to photograph. We had a great opportunity to shoot the NeNe, where they are most at home...on the lava.
