Oahu

On my previous trips to Hawaii, I had always wanted to see Pearl Harbor, but I never had the chance, since I was traveling alone and didn't know anything about getting around in the area. This trip, Jack and I went together. Traveling with someone you care about definitely makes the trip so much better. Before joining the tour, we started off the trip with a full day at Pearl Harbor. It definitely needs a full day (or better yet 2). We tried to see as much as possible. We started off with the USS Arizone Memorial, then the USS Missouri, and then the Pacific Aviation Museum, and then finished up with the USS Bowfin submarine and museum.. We definitely kept on the move. The following day, we had a few hours, so we headed back to Pearl Harbor and were able to get a few long shots of the USS Missouri, USS Arizona Memorial, and just explored the exhibit area. Then we headed off to the airport and on to join up with the tour on the next island...Maui.

Mark 14 Steam-Driven Torpedo
Mark 14 Steam-Driven Torpedo
There were several modifications to the Mark 14 torpedo during the course of WWII. In the early years of the war, torpedoes often ran too deep, did not explode on impact with the target, exploded too soon, or returned to hit the submarine in a "circular run". Work continued throughout the war to develop better models, such as the electric Mark 18 torpedo. in spite of all the mechanical problems encountered through WWII, some five million tons of enemy shipping were destroyed by the submarine's principle weapon - the torpedo.
