Yellowstone In Winter

While traveling on the glavel, we stopped to shoot sunrise. As we moved on, the steam coming out of the area we found some icy trees, created from the large amount of steam coming off of the geothermal springs.
Old Faithful and surrounding geysers!
Throughout our trip, we had been looking for wolves. We had heard about several wolf kills and had even spotted a couple of wolves off in the distance, much too far to really get a good photo of. Then we got lucky. We heard about a recent wolf kill, and the wolves were still there. Doug (our wonderful driver) got us to the area as quickly as possible. We got there just in time to see the last wolf finishing up and getting ready to leave the area. Luckily, this time, it was just across the river and allowed us some decent photo opportunities.
As the wolf moved off the kill, there were lots of others waiting to take advantage of the kill. The bald eagles were the first to arrive, followed by a coyote. The coyote watched everything around, grabbed some food and then moved off. The birds moved in again. Soon, more coyotes showed up to get some dinner. It was interesting to see how many animals were fed off of one wolf kill.
As you can see, the snow in the area was rather deep in areas. After we watched the wolf kill for a while, we moved on and were able to photograph a few more elk and more beautiful landscapes.
Our last day, we were back on our own, driving the roads, where we were able to photograph a beaver, more bison, and coyote.
As we were heading out of the park, we found the bighorn sheep and took a few minutes to photograph them.
Just as we were getting ready to leave the park for lunch, we ran across a coyote walking in the grasses. After lunch we found another coyote to photograph for a little while.
Our last evening in the park, we decided to try to get a sunset shot. While waiting for the sunset, we found a bison to photograph.
We got lucky with our last sunset and were in a good location to shoot!
The next morning, we were back at Mammoth Hot Springs for sunrise. I moved around the area quite a bit and got a few shots of the sun hitting the mountainside behind the springs. Then I moved over to the other side and got a few of the trees that had become ice covered from the steam. This was our last shoot for the trip and we headed for the airport.
Although I was looking forward to this trip, I kept asking myself why I was going some place cold, in the middle of winter, rather than taking the time to go to a warm location. Once I got there, I realized why I was there and why this was a favorite park...in any season. A special thanks to Doug Hilborn, our glavel driver, who fit into our group really well and got us to the best places to shoot. I had traveled with everyone on this trip before and it was good to see everyone again. There were several memorable events on the trip. Thanks to John for providing lots of entertaining moments....Vole Hunting
