Oahu

On my previous trips to Hawaii, I had always wanted to see Pearl Harbor, but I never had the chance, since I was traveling alone and didn't know anything about getting around in the area. This trip, Jack and I went together. Traveling with someone you care about definitely makes the trip so much better. Before joining the tour, we started off the trip with a full day at Pearl Harbor. It definitely needs a full day (or better yet 2). We tried to see as much as possible. We started off with the USS Arizone Memorial, then the USS Missouri, and then the Pacific Aviation Museum, and then finished up with the USS Bowfin submarine and museum.. We definitely kept on the move. The following day, we had a few hours, so we headed back to Pearl Harbor and were able to get a few long shots of the USS Missouri, USS Arizona Memorial, and just explored the exhibit area. Then we headed off to the airport and on to join up with the tour on the next island...Maui.

Mark 14 Exercise Torpedo
Mark 14 Exercise Torpedo
"The warhead on this Mark 14 steam-driven torpedo was replaced by an exercise head so that it could be used for target practice. During target practice, the torpedo would be set to run underneath the intended target. The exercise head has the same dimensions as a warhead, but is filled with water. The water is expelled by high-pressure air, bringing the torpedo to the surface at the end of its run. The head is painted a bright orange, which makes the floating torpedo easier to locate. It could then be retrieved and reused. On 29 August 1980, 45 years after the first MK-14s entered service, this torpedo earneed the distinction of being the last Mark 14 torpedo ever fired by the US Navy submarine, USS Barbel (USS-580) in the waters off Oahu."
