Alaska Alaska has been one place I have wanted to go to for years. I finally got my chance in March 2007. I went on another tour with Lightchase Photography, this time to see parts of Alaska and the Northern Lights. People I knew kept asking me why I was going to Alaska in March and advised I should be going to a warmer climate. As the trip approached, and the Midwest was having some cold days, I was beginning to wonder what in the world I was doing. I had been watching the temperatures in Anchorage and Fairbanks and noticed that Anchorage was running in the 20s and Fairbanks was having highs in the negatives. As we started on our journey, I knew I had made the right decision. Alaska, regardless of the weather, was BEAUTIFUL. Our first morning we drove through Chugach State Park and Chugach National Forest. The water was frozen in most places, yet even in the cold temperatures, there were unfrozen areas. Some ice had broken up and was floating, constantly changing the look. The following pictures are from 2 different mornings in the area. As the sun came up and hit the mountains, the fog moved in, creating an interesting look to the area. As we drove along, we were constantly on the lookout for moose. I was able to see a few along our drive the first day, none were really close enough to take good photos of. Then, that evening as were driving out to check out another area, known for having moose, we passed a Home Depot. There in the parking lot was our first Moose! We dropped back into the parking lot and drove around behind the store. We were able to take quite a few photos of him before he moved on. This sighting quickly became a joke for the rest of the trip. We were beginning to wonder if that would be our only opportunity to photograph a moose. Here are a few photographs of our Home Depot Moose. As you drive along in Alaska, you never know who is watching you from the side of the road! We saw this moose as we passed and had to make a quick turn to go back and get some shots. She was a beautiful moose and once we got there, we found out she had company....a yearling. |
